Click here for Naga New Year Special with Tamanthi National Park and Monywa:

The Naga Hills of Myanmar

Although most people have heard about the Naga tribes there are only a few who have actually been to their area. Your expedition goes right through the center of the Naga region where you will meet some of the 68 Naga tribes. Starting from Mandalay and then on to Monywa you will drive through the largest lowland forest of Myanmar called Mahamyaing forest. After crossing the Chindwin river and travelling a short distance you will enter the Naga Hills and be busy shaking hands with Naga warriors wearing hats made from bear fur, wild boar tusks, hornbill feathers, and tiger claws. Some also have tiger fangs hanging from their necklaces. If you think the thrill isn't enough you can go trekking to Mt Saramati (12553 ft), a sacred mountain for the Nagas, crossing wild pristine forests and some Naga and Chin villages, where civilization has almost never touched. Itineraries ranges from 18 to 24 days.

Best months to visit: December to March

The Chin Hills (Mount Victoria)

chinhillsMt. Victoria (elevation 10200 ft ) is situated in the Chin Hills which form a southward extension of the Himalayas into Southeast Asia. Locally called Khaw Nu Thoung in Chin or Natmataung in Myanmar, they literallly mean "Mother of the Spirits" in both languages: it is the highest peak in the lower half of Myanmar. Mount Victoria has now  been upgraded into a national park (179 sq miles) inhabited by about 200 species of birds including the endemic White-browed Nuthatch; it is also very rich in its biodiversity of flora and fauna. With a four wheel drive vehicle from Bagan you will encounter various types of forests along the way such as the dry forest of Central Myanmar, various qualities of deciduous forest, coniferous forest, broad leaf evergreen forest and high montane forest with mixed oak trees and rhododendrons. For itineraries ranging from 7 to 14 days you will see all of the four endemic birds of Myanmar; you will camp and trek in cool and high elevation forest and get to know some local Chin tribes; you will also enjoy the evenings with locally brewed Khaung Yay and - of course - have a hassle free holiday!

Best months to visit: January to April

Stone-age Padalin Caves

padalin caves

These caves are situated in Ywa Ngan township in the Shan State.

From Kyaukme, a town situated on the Yangon - Mandalay highway there is the road heading 22 miles Eastward until it reaches a reservoir. After a 30 minute boat ride and an hour's trekking through a pristine forest you will approach the Padalin caves: these are a cluster of caves and the largest in Myanmar. Padalin (meaning mercurial light) is said t o have been named because limestone there reflect the light of Mercury, especially the spectacular stalactites and stalagmites.

In one cave you can study mural paintings on the cave walls which are more than 11,000 years old, and are about the same age as prehistoric wall paintings in France, Spain, Indochina and Malaysia.

Surrounded by splendid scenic beauties we assure you that you will enjoy every moment of it!!

Nyaungan Bronze-age Culture Heritage site

This site is situated near Nyaungan village, Budalin township, Sagaing Division

You get there from Mandalay by driving to Monywa (two hours) and then an hour's drive from Monywa to Nyaungan Village, all on asphalt road.

The site is situated on a crater of a dormant volcano which is about 4 miles North-Northeast of the famous Twintaung (famous for its Spirulina and Twinpoe).

There are 5 excavation sites so far, where you can find burial mounds of the Myanmar peoples' ancestors. In these excavation sites human skeletal remains were found together with pots of various sizes and shapes, stone rings, beads, socked bronze axes and some animal bones. This is an extraordinary prehistoric culture which is the missing link between stone-age and iron age culture, and the first discovery of a Bronze-age Burial site in Myanmar.

Seminars and workshops on this Nyaungan site were held in 1999 and it was confirmed that this site is contemporary to that of the Bronze age archeological site in central Thailand.
