Moulmein, Hpa-An & Thanbyuzyat Extension

Day 1: morning depart Kyaikhtiyo for Moulmein (Mawlamyine) via Suvannabumi (Thaton) and Martaban (Moattama). In Thaton visit the Shwe Zayan Pagoda which was built in the early period of the Mon; the standing Buddha is similar to the famous Dvaravati-Buddha in Thailand. Arrive Monywa in time for lunch and in the afternoon walk around this old Capital and visit the Mahamuni Pagoda, the Mon State National Museum and the Kyaikthanlan Pagoda which was immortalised in Kipling's poem "Mandalay". Overnight Moulmein

Day 2: morning drive to Thanbyuzyat the Burma end of the infamous Thai-Burma "Death Railway". See a locomotive and a small piece of track still remaining. Continue to the beautifully maintained Allied War Cemetery. Return to Moulmein via Setse beach, where lunch is served, and the Mudon hand-weaving workshops. Overnight Moulmein

Day 3: morning depart Moulmein for the rarely-visited Hpa-An the capital of the Kayin State and see the striking Mount Zwegabin near to this quaint town. On the way to Thaton see the Bayintyni Caves and then continue to the Mountain View Hotel & Resort near Kyaikto at the foot of Mount Kyaikhtiyo and overnight

Day 3 (ALT): morning depart Moulmein for Yangon. Overnight Yangon

Day 4: morning depart Kyaikhtiyo for Yangon via Bago and in Bago visit the Shwethalyaung Reclining Buddha (circa 994 AD) measuring 55 metres long and the Shwemawdaw Paya towering 114 metres. After lunch visit the Mahazedi Paya originally built by King Bayinnaung, subsequently destroyed by an earthquake in 1930 and finally rebuilt in 1982; the Kaik Pun Paya built in 1476 and where stand four 30-metre high Buddha Images.
